Arbel Fellowship
The Arbel Fellowship is a joint shlichut program shared by the WZO and the Steinhardt Foundation’s Hebrew Public School organization and is aimed at expanding Hebrew education to students who are unable to attend private Jewish schools. The organization includes 10 charter schools across the United States which are open to all students, regardless of religion, race, or gender. As the schools are publicly funded institutions, religion is not actively promoted, and the Israeli teachers focus on Hebrew and Israel, without Jewish-religious aspects. The placement process is done by the organization’s representatives in Israel. In order to receive the full scholarship, the fellow must commit to teaching English for a limited time upon returning to Israel.
Mechanech Israeli
The “Mechanech Israeli” program is a joint shlichut program between the WZO and Israel’s Ministry of Education and includes schools from Europe and Latin America that are approved yearly by the Ministry of Education. The program aims at bringing shlichim to small communities without a standing tradition of Israeli shlichim. The shlichim in the program split their time between teaching and work in the community. Shlichim in the joint program are employed directly by the Ministry of Education and receive all the benefits of a teacher in the public school system in Israel. Representatives of the Ministry select a limited number of candidates who have completed the WZO’s screening process.
